Do you have a small amount of loose skin below your belly button?

A mini tummy tuck or mini abdominoplasty will work only if you have a small amount of loose skin and if it’s all located below your belly button. Ideal candidates will also have limited excess fat and little to no stretch marks. Unfortunately, most women aren’t a candidate for a mini tummy tuck, as pregnancy typically affects the upper and lower abdominal skin and the underlying muscles. Many women desire a mini tummy tuck because the incision is shorter, about the length of a C-section scar. A shorter scar is created because much less skin is removed. Also, there is no scar around the belly button since the mini tummy tuck only focuses on the lower part of the abdomen. Our surgeons won’t correct just the lower muscle laxity (below the belly button) because if you repair only the lower portion of the rectus diastasis, the upper portion, above the belly button to the sternum, will bulge even more because it is also weak. SAFELipo® is often performed along with a mini tummy tuck to recontour the upper abdomen and the lateral abdomen or hip area(s).

We want you to have the best result possible, so during your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate these critical factors:

  • Quality of your skin:
    • presence and location of stretch marks
    • crepiness of your skin
  • Diastasis of your rectus muscles, or how far apart the paired rectus muscles are stretched in the midline
  • Excess fat; how much of it and where is it located?
  • Presence of hernia(s), the most common being an umbilical hernia

These factors will determine which type of tummy tuck will give you the best result. Although the scar is slightly longer with a standard tummy tuck, in many patients, the trade off is more than worth it.

What Makes a Mini Tummy Tuck Different From a Full Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is designed for patients whose concerns are limited to the lower abdomen, specifically the area below the belly button. Unlike a full tummy tuck, a mini procedure does not reposition the belly button and does not address skin laxity or muscle separation above it. This makes it ideal for individuals with a small “pooch” that persists despite healthy eating and exercise.

At Restora Austin, we prioritize selecting the right procedure for your anatomy—not simply the one with the smallest scar. While many patients initially request a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck may provide a more balanced and natural-looking result if upper abdominal laxity or muscle separation is present. During your consultation, we will walk you through the differences in detail so you feel confident in your decision.

The Restora Austin Approach to Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery

Our surgeons take a comprehensive approach to abdominal contouring. Even in cases where a mini tummy tuck is appropriate, we carefully assess skin elasticity, muscle tone, fat distribution, and body proportions. This ensures that the final result looks smooth, natural, and harmonious with your waist and hips.

When indicated, SAFELipo® is combined with a mini tummy tuck to refine the upper abdomen and flanks. This combination allows us to sculpt the midsection rather than simply remove skin, creating a more athletic and contoured appearance.

What to Expect During a Mini Tummy Tuck Recovery

Recovery from a mini tummy tuck is typically shorter and more manageable than recovery from a full abdominoplasty. Most patients return to light activity within 7–10 days, with gradual resumption of exercise over several weeks. Because the procedure is less extensive, swelling and discomfort are generally reduced compared to a full tummy tuck.

You will receive detailed post-operative instructions and close follow-up care from our team. As a boutique practice, Restora Austin emphasizes individualized recovery guidance so you always feel supported and informed throughout the healing process.

Is a Mini Tummy Tuck Right for You?

The best candidates are individuals who:

  • Are close to their ideal weight
  • Have mild skin laxity below the belly button
  • Do not have significant upper abdominal muscle separation
  • Are finished having children
  • Maintain realistic expectations about what the procedure can and cannot address

If your concerns extend above the belly button or include significant muscle laxity, a full tummy tuck may provide a more complete and satisfying outcome. Our goal is not just improvement—but the best possible long-term result.

Mini Tummy Tuck in Austin, TX – FAQs

How do I know if I truly qualify for a mini tummy tuck?

Qualification depends on anatomy, not preference. If your loose skin and fullness are confined to the lower abdomen and you have minimal muscle separation, you may be a good candidate. During your consultation at Restora Austin, your surgeon will physically examine the skin, muscle tone, and fat distribution to determine whether a mini or full tummy tuck will give you the best contour.

Will a mini tummy tuck fix my “mom pooch”?

If the fullness is limited to loose skin or mild lower abdominal laxity, yes. However, if the fullness is caused by muscle separation extending above the belly button, a mini procedure alone will not fully correct it. In those cases, a full tummy tuck may be recommended to restore a flatter, stronger abdominal contour.

Can I combine a mini tummy tuck with liposuction?

Yes. In fact, combining SAFELipo® with a mini tummy tuck is common at Restora Austin. Liposuction helps contour the upper abdomen, flanks, and waistline, enhancing the overall result and preventing imbalance between treated and untreated areas.

Will my scar be noticeable?

The incision is typically similar in length to a C-section scar and is placed low on the abdomen so it can be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. Over time, scars fade significantly. Our surgeons use meticulous closure techniques to promote optimal healing and minimize scar visibility.

How long do mini tummy tuck results last?

Results are long-lasting as long as your weight remains stable and you do not undergo future pregnancies. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help preserve your flatter abdominal contour for years to come.

How painful is recovery?

Most patients describe discomfort as manageable and less intense than a full tummy tuck. You may experience tightness, swelling, and soreness for the first several days. We provide a detailed recovery plan and pain management guidance to keep you comfortable.

When can I exercise again?

Light walking is encouraged early in recovery. Most patients resume low-impact exercise within 3–4 weeks and return to more strenuous abdominal workouts after clearance from their surgeon, typically around 6 weeks.

What if I choose a mini tummy tuck but need a full tummy tuck?

Our responsibility is to recommend the procedure that will give you the best outcome. If a full tummy tuck is more appropriate, we will explain why in detail. Choosing the right operation the first time prevents dissatisfaction and the need for revision surgery later.

Why choose Restora Austin for a mini tummy tuck?

Restora Austin is known for its boutique, relationship-centered approach and consistently high patient satisfaction. Our surgeons emphasize honest recommendations, refined surgical technique, and natural-looking results. We believe in doing what is right for your anatomy, not simply what sounds appealing, so that you can feel confident, balanced, and beautiful long term.

What are my other tummy tuck options besides a mini tummy tuck?

If a mini tummy tuck is not the right fit for your anatomy, you may be a better candidate for either a full (standard) tummy tuck or a Tummy Tuck 360. A full tummy tuck addresses loose skin and muscle separation both above and below the belly button and includes repositioning the belly button for a smooth, natural contour. This is often recommended for patients with more significant changes after pregnancy or weight loss. A Tummy Tuck 360 is a more comprehensive option that combines a full tummy tuck with circumferential liposuction to sculpt the waist, flanks, and lower back for enhanced definition from every angle. During your consultation at Restora Austin, your surgeon will explain which approach will give you the most balanced, long-lasting result based on your anatomy and goals.

Testimonials

Kelly

My name is Kelly and Dr. Ashley Gordon did my procedures.

I went to many other doctors, did extensive research, did a lot of consultations… I just never had that feeling that everything was a complete package. So I was researching on the internet and I went from the Houston market to the Austin market, and Restora came up. It did not matter if there was one review, or 120 reviews, it was always five stars.
