Drain-Free Tummy Tuck = Less Anxiety, Less Pain, Faster Recovery, Improved Scar
Are you considering a tummy tuck, but have concerns about the drains, drain-related scarring and a long recovery?
It’s no secret that one of the things patients worry about the most when it comes to their tummy tuck procedure is drain(s). The idea of drains causes anxiety about discomfort, messiness, and burden on one’s caretaker during recovery. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Gordon is the first surgeon in Austin that is TissuGlu® Drain-Free Certified. While all patients are not candidates for drain-free tummy tucks, many are. Always innovators, our surgeons are excited about the possibility of providing you with a drain-free tummy tuck experience.

Drain-Free Tummy Tuck Q&A
ANY OTHER ADVICE?
While TissuGlu is a great advance in tummy tucks surgery, it’s important to remember that a tummy tuck is still surgery, and your body needs time to heal. You may feel so good after surgery that you want to do more than you should, but it’s critical to follow our post-operative instructions to optimize your recovery and result.
ARE THERE INCREASED RISKS WHEN TissuGlu IS USED?
Clinical studies were performed using TissuGlu®. There were no increased safety risks with the use of TissuGlu® than when drains were used. Potential complications associated with the use of the device and the tummy tuck procedures include seroma (fluid) formation. These complications may require treatments such as drain placement and/or fluid removal by needle.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TissuGlu AFTER I’M HEALED?
After you are fully healed, the adhesive breaks down into harmless components and is eliminated from the body.
HOW DOES TissuGlu DECREASE PAIN AND IMPROVE THE SCAR?
We believe it’s due to the fact that each drop of TissuGlu that’s placed is strong enough to hold about 10 pounds of shear force! That’s the amount the force that your body exerts when you bend or twist. By withstanding these forces, your tissues are stabilized and they aren’t pulling away from each other while you are healing. This stability leads to decreased pain and leads to a better scar because of reduced tension on the incision. Also, you won’t have a scar(s) where the drain was.
DOES THE USE OF TissuGlu OFFER ANY OTHER BENEFITS?
TissuGlu® reduces the need for drains after surgery, so you won’t have to deal with the nuisance of caring for and cleaning drains, but we’ve also observed other exciting benefits like:
- Return to normal activities more quickly
- Less discomfort and pain than when drains are used
- Better scarring as the TissuGlu takes tension off the incision while it’s healing
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CONTRAINDICATIONS TO TissuGlu?
- The effectiveness for the treatment of patients with BMI > 28 has not been established. Higher BMI patients have a propensity for fluid accumulation and may have an increased risk of seroma formation.
- Also, effectiveness was not observed in massive weight loss patients undergoing abdominoplasty. Massive weight loss patients have a propensity for fluid accumulation and may have an increased risk of seroma formation and aspiration.
- TissuGlu cannot be used when extensive liposuction is being performed at the same time as a tummy tuck, like in a Tummy Tuck 360. The fluid injected during the liposuction procedure and the fluid produced by the body during healing process after the Tummy Tuck 360 necessitate drain placement.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP A FLUID COLLECTION IF TissuGlu IS USED?
It’s possible but rare. In the initial studies, patients who received TissuGlu had 4x less total wound drainage than the control group. In the event that you develop a fluid collection, it can be drained in the office under topical anesthesia by inserting a small needle into the fluid collection and aspirating it.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO TissuGlu?
Allergic reactions are very rare, but patients with known or suspected allergies to urethane-based or isocyanate-containing products cannot receive TissuGlu.
HOW DOES TissuGlu ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR DRAINS?
The TissuGlu is applied to the abdominal wall musculature in a precise grid pattern using a special applicator before closure. The TissuGlu is allowed to set, creating a strong bond between the fascia (the tissue covering the muscle) and the fatty layer above it. This bond reduces the space between layers where fluid could accumulate, thereby eliminating the need for a drain(s).
WHAT EXACTLY IS TissuGlu?
TissuGlu Surgical Adhesive is the first and only FDA-approved synthetic surgical adhesive approved for internal use. It’s a lysine-based urethane adhesive that creates a strong, secure bond between tissues, helping to facilitate natural healing so you can recover without drains. In a clinical study, those who had TissuGlu returned to everyday activities (showering, driving, returning to work) sooner without the discomfort, inconvenience, and scarring associated with drains.
WHY ARE DRAINS USED IN A TUMMY TUCK?
In traditional abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery, a potential space is created where fluid can accumulate between the abdominal wall musculature and the overlying fat and skin. Normally, one or two drains are placed in this area to collect the fluid that the body produces during the healing process. Drains usually stay in place for 7-10 days until the tissues have healed back to each other and the potential space for fluid collection is no longer there.
