FTM top surgery, or chest masculinization surgery, is one transgender top surgery option that we offer here at Restora Austin Plastic Surgery Centre. Keep reading to learn more about this transformational procedure.

What Is FTM Top Surgery?

FTM top surgery transforms a feminine chest with breasts, into a flatter, more masculine-appearing chest. It is so much more than just breast removal surgery, however. Our goal isn’t just a flat chest, but rather an overall masculine shape. FTM top surgery includes:

  • Removal of most breast tissue and excess skin
  • Removal of the inframammary fold (fold under the breast)
  • Nipple/areola reduction and repositioning.

We have several options available to accomplish this and will choose the surgical methods best suited to your anatomy and goals. The best way to learn about your options is to schedule an in-person consultation.

Factors that Complicate FTM Top Surgery

FTM top surgery is a very complex procedure and requires a highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon for the best results. Getting things right the first time is very important as previous surgeries can complicate FTM surgery and decrease the quality of the end result.

Several factors make FTM top surgery complex including:

  • Poor skin elasticity– Often caused by years of breast binding
  • Breast size– Larger breasts can be more difficult to work with during top surgery. Typically patients with larger breasts require longer, more visible incisions.
  • Patient goals

Revision After FTM Top Surgery

Need for revision surgery is uncommon but may include removal of “dog ears” (little flaps of skin sticking out from the side of the chest, often in the armpits), touch-up liposuction, nipple reduction, etc. Usually, these revisions are simple and can be performed in-office without downtime. These little tweaks help us to achieve your ideal chest appearance.
