LONG TERM QUESTIONS

Any Advice On Maintaining My New Look?

Follow our advice on what type of bra to wear after surgery. This will help your breasts to maintain shape, and avoids putting pressure on recent incisions, as not to stress healing tissue.

Will My Implants Affect My Fitness Routine?

After allowing appropriate time to heal, your implants will not get in the way of your fitness routine. After 6 weeks, you will be able to perform all of your usual exercise routines, including push-ups and pull-ups. Specific chest exercises should be avoided for the first 6 weeks to allow the chest muscles to fully relax.

When Should I Re-start My Monthly Breast Self-Exams?

Your breasts will feel a bit unnatural for the first 6 weeks due to swelling and muscle tightness. You will begin massaging after the first week and this will help you become familiar with the look and feel of your new breasts. You should resume your monthly BSE (breast self-exams) 6-8 weeks after surgery. A few minutes each month can affect the rest of your life.

How Will Pregnancy and/or Breastfeeding Affect My Implants?

Every woman has different results with breast implants before or after a pregnancy. If you become pregnant, your breasts will grow and go through all of the usual changes associated with childbearing and breastfeeding. The amount of enlargement will vary from woman to woman. Some women may desire a breast lift if ptosis, or drooping, occurs after breastfeeding.

Should I Wait and Have Breast Augmentation After I am Finished Having Children?

If you are trying to get pregnant in the next few months, we recommend waiting to have your breast augmentation.

Can a Mammogram Rupture My Implants?

Implants are designed to withstand 25 times the pressure of a mammogram, so it would take a significant impact or force to rupture an implant in the human body.

Do Breast Implants Interfere with Detection of Breast Cancer?

No. When you are at the age to start annual mammograms, you will need to inform the mammographer that you have breast implants. Specialized views will be performed to evaluate your tissues. Submuscular placement of breast implants makes visualization of your natural breast tissue easier to visualize than subglandular placement. Please let us know if you have a family history of breast cancer and if you’ve had a mammogram before.

Why Do I Need to Come in on an Annual Basis?

It is important to follow up on the first anniversary of your augmentation and every year after if possible, even if you have no concerns. Breast implants should not be considered lifetime devices, so it is imperative to maintain an ongoing relationship with us.

What is the Average Life Expectancy of a Breast Implant? And, is There a Set Time When I Will Need to Have My Implants Exchanged for Newer Ones?

Although an implant may last for a lifetime, no implant should be viewed as a lifetime device that will remain intact forever without needing replacement. Implant duration varies from woman to woman. If you are happy with your implants and are not experiencing any problems, there is no need to change them. Replacement is often prompted by choice. Implants stay the same, but your body will change as you mature. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain and loss, and gravity can affect the appearance of the breasts. For some women, revisional surgery means changing the size of their implants to fit a more mature body and lifestyle. For others, their breast tissue may start to sag over the implant, and a breast lift can be performed, with or without replacing the implants.

Are My Implants Covered By a Warranty

Sientra only makes silicone gel implants and their warranty is the best in the business. Their implants are warrantied for life against rupture or deflation. They also offer free replacement of the opposite side. In addition, if your rupture occurs in the first 10 years, they will give you an additional $3600 in financial assistance to offset the cost of replacing the implants. Sientra provides an additional warranty for Capsular Contracture called CapCon3. This warranty only applies to PRIMARY breast augmentation patients and provides coverage for 2 years against capsular contracture - Baker Grade III or IV. The coverage starts the day of the primary augmentation and will provide a replacement implant for free but no coverage of surgery or hospital costs.
